DALAMAN & SARIGERME BEACH
Mugla off the south western coast of Turkey is the perfect tourist
destination - people are friendly, the climate is hot and the sea is warm. But
the visitors flocking to this area are already impacting its fragile
environment. Tourist development is placing particular pressure on the turtle
population and through this project you will be playing a vital role in ithis
species' protection. The two project sites are Dalaman and Sarigerme, situated
at either end of the popular tourist spot, Dalaman Beach. Dalaman Beach is the
nesting site of the endangered sea turtle (Carretta carretta) and the nearby
wetland area with its great botanical and wildlife interest is another sensitive
habitat in need of attention.
In Dalaman, Sarigerme and Calis swimming, snorkelling and trekking (if you can
take the heat!) are free and easily accessible. From Calis, there numerous boat
trips and sightseeing excursions available (not included). Go white water
rafting in Dalaman and Sarigerme - the cool spray is very welcome! In addition,
the tourist area of Dalyan is just 45 minutes away and offers numerous sea and
river trips, as well as other organised sightseeing excursions.
Sequestered in a luck green mountainous region of Turkey, with a portion of
town hugging the beautiful Dalyan River, Dalaman is a destination unlike those
typically visited in this country. Not many people live in Dalaman, and among
them, most are farmers, or have some part in the Turkish agricultural business.
Looking around, youll be surrounded by lush foliage, few roads to get you to
places in town, and what may seem like a lack of basic accommodations. But it is
easy to make the most of the beautiful, undeveloped land of Dalaman and make
your visit to southern-Turkey quite memorable and rewarding.
Sarigerme
The beach at Sarigerme is even longer than Iztuzu beach and thought by many to
be more scenic. The golden sand is fringed with pines, sweeping views east take
in the mouth of the Dalaman River and the mountains around Fethiye. Baba Adasi,
a small island of rock just offshore thus protecting the beach, adds to the
beauty. The water is colder but cleaner here owing to fresh water springs, which
flow to the sea from the westernmost cove. Unlike Iztuzu however, Sarigerme has
not been saved from the developers. At least four huge, holiday complexes,
mainly catering for German guests, hug the beach but are thankfully well set
back from the sand and their sight from the water's edge is obscured by the pine
trees.
Sarigerme is yellow sign posted from the highway just east of Ortaca and from here the beach itself is a little over 25 kms.
